Compact speedcars rock Maryborough

Fourty two of australias best compact speedcar drivers headed north to Maryborough over the Australia day long weekend to contest the 31st australian compact speedcar championship, and the large crowed on hand over the three nights of racing were not disapointed.

After sixteen heats A1 Danny Stainer and Q4 Tony Brearley were tied on 1024 points and were set for 25 out standing laps ahead of them. Brearley didnt have luck on his side as his swift engine went off tune and while trying to make a pass on Peter Robothom clipped a wheel and landed upside down into the turn two wall, amazingly this was the only roll over for the weekend. The remaining laps saw Q85 Craig Smith and V26 Peter Robothom hunting down Stainer but at the fall of the chequed flag Stainer claimed yet another A1 to his name.

Matt�s Back!

Matt Turvey and the Precision Engines Team headed to Laang Speedway on Sunday December 30th for their first race meeting in 18 months after missing all of last season. Matt was debuting his brand new Precision Engines, Holden VK Commodore and his main aim for the night was to keep the car straight.

Matt started his Redline #5 Commodore from position six in heat one, on a track that had just been watered. Matt struggled to adjust to the wet track and slipped back to seventh place on lap two with the car unable to hold traction. Midway through the heat, the Laang #86 car spun in turn four, leaving Matt with nowhere to go. The resulting contact damaged some panels on the left hand side, but nothing that would stop them competing for the rest of the night. Matt finished heat one in sixth position.

Winner saves his best till last

BRISBANE'S Brodie Tulloch saved the best till last, by surprising his competition and turning on the speed in the Campbell Wrecking Sprintcar Feature on New Year's Day at Grafton Speedway.

Although Brodie won his first heat, it wasn't until starting next to race favourite Brock Dean in the feature race that he was able to stamp his authority on the night.

Brock Dean was fast earlier in the night, winning his heat, but missed the set-up for the all important feature.

BOXING DAY BEGINS A MONSTER MONTH AT AVALON RACEWAY

The tradition continues at Avalon Raceway this festive season when the exciting Sprintcars return for the annual running of the Gold Cup on Boxing Day. What follows in the ensuing days and weeks is simply a motorsport lover’s paradise at the Lara venue as it plays host to several of Australia’s leading events.

Avalon Raceway’s Jeff Drew is keen to begin the post Christmas action, as there is an abundance of sensational events on offer throughout the Christmas and New Year period.

“Over the next five and a half weeks we will see 7 events at the venue with a large majority of them nationally recognised. We have it all covered with the popular Sprintcars, Super Sedans, Speedcars and of course the demolition derby and Great Aussie Dunny Derby in there too!”

Boxing Day is the beginning of the action when the Sprintcars return to the popular Lara venue.

Sedan Legend Honoured with National Series Award

The achievements and influence of one of Australia’s greatest ever speedway sedan competitors will be honoured during the 2007/2008 Carline Mufflers National Super Sedan Series. John Leslight spent more than 30 years competing in speedway sedan events across Australia, accumulating an unprecedented record of success in a multitude of events at a myriad of race venues in every Australian state.

A legendary figure held in high esteem by competitors, spectators and track operators alike, Leslight retired from competition at the conclusion of the 2006/2007 season, drawing the curtain on one of the most enduring careers in Australian speedway. Leslight was a fierce competitor who traveled extensively every season to attend all of the major events on the Super Sedan calendar, often with great success. Having started his career at Lismore Speedway when the venue was the bastion of sedan racing in Australia, Leslight quickly established himself as a gifted and uncompromising talent behind the wheel. Despite the success and high profile he accrued in subsequent years, Leslight remained a strong supporter of regional venues and is one of the most traveled competitors in the history of the sport.

Special Guest for Carline National Series

In addition to a star-studded field of Australia’s very best Super Sedan drivers, the 2007/2008 Carline Mufflers National Super Sedan Series will also feature a very special guest in former USA Crew Chief of the Year Kirk Loudy.

A former crew chief for American Late Model superstars Scott Bloomquist and Brian Berkhofer, Loudy is widely recognised as an expert in chassis set-up and suspension tuning. He is a consultant for Mastersbilt Race Cars and is the designer of the new AFCO M2 and T2 racing shocks. Loudy has vast experience with four-bar, leaf spring and z-link suspension configurations and will be using his Australian visit to familiarise himself with local track conditions and develop a greater understanding of the various issues that impact upon race car set-ups in Australia.

McHugh and Brims Battle Again

After an interruption to the status quo at the previous round, the 2007/2008 Ian Boettcher Volkswagen Super Sedan Championship Series returned to ‘normal’ at Lismore Speedway on Saturday, December 8 with Jamie McHugh and Wayne Brims once again locked in combat at the front of the field in the 30-lap feature race. Despite some wet weather-induced difficult track conditions, the Gold Coast-based duo were again the class of the field as they continued their battle for championship supremacy.

On this occasion, it was McHugh who emerged victorious after qualifying his Ian Boettcher Race Parts Mazda RX8 on pole position. Having started alongside McHugh on the front row, Brims trailed throughout to annex second spot on his home track. Between them, the pair have now won seven of the eight events contested and it has only been greater consistency from Brims that enabled him to maintain narrow points advantage.

Avalon Washout Keeps Van Bremmin On Track

The third round of the Eureka Garages and Sheds Super Sprint Series, which was due to be held last Saturday evening (December 15) at Geelong’s Avalon Raceway was unfortunately washed out.

The Mike Van Bremen Racing team, were like the other 44 teams set to contest the event, disappointed.

Van Bremen will now gear up for a busy period over Christmas and the New Year, with the fourth round of the Eureka Series on Boxing Day at Avalon Raceway, followed by Wanless World Series Sprintcars at Avalon on December 30 and Warrnambool’s Sungold Stadium on January 1.

West Aussie Star Signs for NSSS

From the outset, the National Super Sedan Series has been very successful in bringing many of the finest drivers from around the country together to determine Australia’s best. However, due to the logistical dilemmas that have prevented the series from traveling to Western Australia – and the sheer effort required from drivers in making the trek east to take part - race fans have had only limited opportunities to see West Aussie competitors taking part in the series. However, all that is about to change this season with confirmation that one of Western Australia’s most accomplished Super Sedan drivers has committed to the entire 2007/2008 NSSS schedule.

Perth’s Keith Higgs will join the tour full-time this season following a successful cameo appearance during the Speedway Racing News Triple Crown staged over three consecutive nights in Victoria and South Australia that concluded the 2006/2007 series. In his first ever NSSS outing at Mount Gambier’s Borderline Speedway, Higgs was an instant sensation and qualified on the front row for the feature. Although he faded to finish 15th, the following night at Mildura’s Timmis Speedway produced a much more consistent performance that saw him qualify sixth and finish a fine fourth. Despite failing to make the feature in the final round at Mount Gambier, Higgs finished tenth overall in the Triple Crown standings.
