7-02-2004 Parramatta City Raceway,

Well the old saying about a full moon causing strange things to happen certainly played true for me tonight. After the good effort from my last meeting I was looking to improve however due to the enforced changes to the front end I was not sure how it would handle.

I drew position 6 for my 1st heat but with the likes of Tim Bink, Shane Duggan, Brian Reed, Bryan Foyle and a host of other guys getting faster every week starting in front; it was not going to be an easy race. The track was quite wet as well which never seems to suit my car but I wasn’t about to concede defeat. I got off to a fairly good start and was in position 4 after a lap or 2 but the car was quite a handful with the back trying to pass the front at every opportunity and I slipped back to 5th or 6th before I seemed to lose nearly all power so I just coasted around to finish last. After inspection in the pits I found I had melted an accelerator cable on the extractors causing the problem.

Heat 2 and I was out of position 5 and wanted to make up for the bad start to the night but it was soon to get worst. On the 3rd or 4th lap I was bungled back in the pack after contact through turns 3 and 4 and my accelerator problem still not totally fixed was causing quite a slow exit speed from the corners. To cap that off the car started getting a slight miss and with 1 or 2 laps to go that miss seemed to turn into that horrible death rattle so I turned it off and coasted down the back straight into the pits with my night over.

After closer inspection once I got home the death rattle turned out to be a thrown rocker and the push rod bouncing off the rocker cover to my delight, after thinking the season was over with a blown motor! I should have known a Ray Healey built motor from Portland Automotive would never blow up!!!

My next meeting will now be at PCR on the 28 of this Month as a shake down to the Aussie title at Wagga on the 13 of March. Hopefully I got rid of all the bugs and bad luck at the meeting just gone! See you at the track!!! Leigh Bourke #9
