17/01/2004 Parramatta City Raceway,
Tonight was the night that I was looking at continuing some of the good form that I had at my last meeting. Coming off the back row in of my 1st heat on a fast track was not going to be easy especially with a few good guys at the front. I got a good start and rounded up a few cars around the outside on the 1st lap and continued to make inroads from there until I got up to 5th where I was getting held up a bit but decided to settle for the position as I was going to be off pole in the next heat. The track was nice and hooky with a few wet spots when I came out for heat 2 off pole so I knew it was going to be a fast race. I got a nice jump when the green came on and kept the foot in the bucket around 1 and 2 knowing there was some fast guys behind me, the car was going into the corners nice but pushing mid corner causing me some problems but I wasn’t coming off the pole line because I was expecting 1 of the faster guys behind me to take a peek any second. As the last 2 laps approached I made a couple of mistakes coming out of 4 thinking they where snapping at my heels but ended up coming home with a comfortable and 1st win in this division. After all the points where tallied for the final I ended up in grid position 5 which was good to get near the front in a final at last. The talent of the drivers around me however, and the 3 and 4 lane race track was going to make it 1 hell of a race to stay there though. As the lights went green I instantly lost a few positions checking up behind a car in the 1st corner, from there it was head down and try to move forward. I managed to miss an altercation in front of me (finally) and made up 2 spots up to 5th and started chasing down the next car in front, after a good run out of turn 2 I drove past the next car on the main straight for 4th spot and set out to close the gap on the next driver. After making some ground on the lead 3 after they got caught in traffic it was to no avail as I ran out of laps and come home in a comfortable 4th spot. It was a good night overall as everyone was pushing there cars to the limit. Hopefully next meeting on the 30th of Jan I will be able to improve with a few more little set up tweaks and a bit of luck. See you at the track!!! Leigh Bourke #9 |
