28/02/2004 Parramatta City Raceway

After nearly a week of on and off rain it was good to see another nice day to go racing. After the previous meeting I was keen to get the car back out on the track to make sure I had fixed all the problems and to see if some changes to the set up I had done was going to be any good.

The track looked fairly good by the time our 1st heat came around and a grid draw of 7th was going to make sure I had my work cut out for me. I got a good start and made a few spots up and from there got in a good battle with Ken Schippell #4 and Bryan Foyle #6 for 3rd 4th and 5th spot. Bryan ended up pulling away a bit and left Ken and me to fight it right down to the line where I managed to sneak through by a whisker to claim 4th.

The second heat I drew right back in 12th spot due to our 2 groups of heats being combined because lack of time. With no points on the line it was more about having some fun and keeping out of trouble, the track was very hooky by this race and I could only manage to get up to about 7th by the end, and with the car getting a bit hot and bogging down a lot coming out of the corners was glad just to get to the finish.

The final grid positions where calculated on how we finished our 1st heat so that put me out of position 7. The track had slickened off quite a bit since our last heat so I was looking forward to some good racing. The racing was close, hard and fast through out the 1st few laps and my position changed from between 4th and 7th quite a few times as I tried to come to grips with the track. I committed myself to the high line and at times it looked like it had payed off but after hitting the cushion and bouncing up track a few times I was down in about 7th when coming into turn 3, again on the high side with the loud pedal on the floor a right side tie rod end called it quits and snapped leaving me going straight over the banking and heading for the fence at nearly full speed, but fortunately I was able to pull the car up just as it hit the fence on the outside of the trotting track. My final cut short but the car still straight after what could have been a very big accident.

My next race meeting now is the N.A.S.R Aussie Title at Wagga on the 13th of March so I will go right over the car and make sure it is all spot on before then and hopefully we can have some good luck up there and come home with a top 5 spot. Hope to see you there! Leigh Bourke #9
