Tough Weekend at the Office for Leigh Bourke Motorsport!!!

By: Leigh Bourke Motorsport

The weather was hot but cloudy for the fifth round of the PCR Street Stocker Track Championship where another strong field of 29 cars where on hand. My night started well, with me drawing the #1 marble out of the bag, putting me off pole in my opening heat. The track looked a little wet in spots but overall very racy.

I had not touched the car, setup wise, from the last meeting as it was going fast and handling well, however come heat race time, I had a very ill handling car that would turn in good but have a horrible mid corner push. I led the field away, after a fairly good start and continued there for a few laps until I ran wide going down the back straight allowing Bryan Foyle an easy pass and Richard Elliot to pull up beside me. I ran the car in hard on the outside of Foyle in turn three and four with us making slight contact but I managed to get back in front of Elliot. I chased hard for the next few laps as we built up a handy break from the rest of the pack and came close to a pass on a few occasions on Foyle, but in the end had to settle for hard fought but enjoyable second place.

Due to coming out of pole for my first heat, the field was inverted and I started down the back for the second heat, out of position eight. I got away to a bit of a sluggish start but made up a few spots through the middle and around the high line on the opening lap. By now there was a fair size cushion up high and coming out of turn four, I got pushed wide by a hard charging Ken Schippell, who was gunning for the same bit of real estate as me. I managed to keep the foot in the bucket and go around Ken but then again we made slight contact in turns one and two sending me out on to the trotting track again, this time having to back off and losing all the positions I had made up. From there I made up some ground but ended up in seventh place. Not that bad as I knew the top 10 cars where going to be inverted for the final.

With second and seventh in my two heats, I qualified seventh on points and after the inversion that put me out of three, in the middle of 6 Holden’s, for the final. That was about as far as I got as at the drop of the green, again with a sluggish start, I only got as far as the 1st corner before being drilled hard in the L/H side, after being used as brakes, by an over enthusiastic driver and only just managed not to be turned around, I knew something was a miss going down the back straight when the car was not responding to where I wanted to put it. Luckily everyone else got by as I shot of the top of turn 3 and 4 with a broken tie rod end and that put a premature end to my night. As they say in the classics “that’s racing” I guess!?!

I will be back at PCR on the 27th of December to try and get the #69 Portland Automotive, Oval track Marketing, Redline Media, Australianspeedway.com and Active Auto EF Ford Falcon back in race winning form. Hope to see you there.
